Mitochondria for the cell are like the lung for humans. They enable cellular respiration and thus produce biochemical energy from absorbed nutrients. Walter Neupert, Max Planck Fellow at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Martinsried near Munich, Germany, will today be honored with the Ernst Jung Medal for Medicine in Gold for his life’s work. The Ernst Jung Gold Medal is a symbolic award but will be connected with an amount of 30,000 Euros. Walter Neupert can use this money to support a junior scientist of his choice.
Since 1990, the Jung Foundation for Science and Research in Hamburg awards the Ernst Jung Gold Medal for great achievements which have already been made. It honours exceptional contributions to medical progress and the entire lifetime achievement of a scientist in research and clinical work.
